What I do…

I  guide open-minded individuals along their holistic journey, helping them feel healthier and more energetic.   To achieve this, I assess nutritional status, offer integrative bodywork, and suggest specific homeopathic/herbal remedies.

What I Believe…

I believe that everyone can feel healthy and energetic, even balanced and resilient, but sometimes it takes time, patience, and help to get there.  I believe that “wellness” doesn’t have to be hard nor does it mean lots of supplements from bottles, but it does mean home-cooked meals made from real food.  I believe food and movement form the basis of a resilient lifestyle.  I believe that any approach to health must address the needs of the whole person – our physical body, our mind, and our spiritual self are all intertwined, so we must address all aspects to achieve health.

How It All Began…

I first knew I wanted to be a naturopath when nutrition papers and books became exciting to read (yet frustrating because of the dogma), while my toddler son and I were grappling with hives, eczema and food allergies. With guidance from a local naturopath, I used diet changes and a few well-selected nutrients, and within just days, my hives vanished; a few weeks later, his sandpaper cheeks transformed into normal soft cherub toddler cheeks.

I later applied this knowledge to my husband when he had gallbladder attacks.  Back to the science I went, and learned how to let him keep eating his beloved bacon (and let him keep his gallbladder) without the pain of those attacks.

Another aspect in my practice is the bodywork.  I had tremendous pain in my pregnancy, continuing months after my baby was born.  The only thing that helped was the bodywork I now offer.  I could barely walk up the 2 flights of stairs with a laundry basket – now, I run up the stairs with my laundry basket as a basic form of exercise.

Before That…

I grew up in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario (yes, I’m a Canadian, eh!), raised on my mother’s turkey soup and lactofermented dill pickles, among other real foods.  During really busy school evenings, we occasionally ate at fast food venues en route to various after-school activities (ballet, figure skating, piano lessons).  We hiked on the Bruce Trail, learned local plant names, and went exploring at Old Baldy (overlooking Kimberly, Ontario).  A product of public education, I lived at home while I studied Biology and Math at Wilfrid Laurier University, then moved away to pursue my Master’s in Math at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario.

I then ventured farther afield and received a PhD in Evolutionary Biology from the University of Connecticut (Go Huskies!).  I studied the mitochondrial genome of fruit flies at the Field Museum as a post-doctoral fellow, then moved to Bloomington to run a genome center at Indiana University.  Whilst working full-time, I started my distance-based ND program through the University of Natural Medicine, studied the Magic and Medicine of Plants with Sean Donahue, and phased in an apprenticeship with Graham Montague.  Once I left the university, I started training with Elizabeth Pantzer, DVM to learn more about homeopathy and Traditional Chinese Medicine in non-verbal clients (she’s a vet).  I am a Certified Traditional Naturopath through the American Naturopathic Certification Board (which means that I studied for their exam and passed with a sufficiently high score to earn the privilege of using that title).  My full credentials are available.
